Another ICE execution

American law enforcement agents from ICE shot and killed another person in Minneapolis. Alex Pretti was a law abiding citizen, carrying a gun and permitted by law. ICE commander Gregory Bovino, who is deemed by many to look somewhat Nazi, said that carrying a gun into the protest constitutes sufficient reason to be deemed a threat (even with the gun removed) and killed. What about the second amendment? The law that allows us to carry guns? To protect ourselves and others in dangerous situations?

Alex Pretti was a lawful gun owner, licensed to carry his gun. He was attending a protest which had the potential to turn dangerous. In such situations, the use of his gun may be called for, legally, such as in self defense. That’s what guns are for, after all. If we are not allowed to carry them in a dangerous situation, where are they supposed to be used?

Now, this was a riot, where people were generally not obeying ICE orders. In situations where control is limited, shooting becomes more likely. The same is true in war. We shoot at soldiers of the opposing army that we can’t control and who don’t obey our orders. Once under control, as prisoners of war, they have human rights and cannot be killed.

The situation with Alex Pretti was that he was not under arrest, no attempt at arrest was made and there was no obvious motion to resist arrest. Thus, his killing amounts to the summary execution of a prisoner. This is very bad for the image of ICE.

Why is this happening now? I argue the events in Minneapolis are not without a link to the release of the Epstein files. The whole administration is under stress, divided and benefits from anything to take the media away from Epstein. The invasion of Venezuela serves the same purpose.

Trump’s lecture at Davos was a disaster that suggests significant cognitive decline. This is fairly normal, given Trump’s age, but most people this age don’t have to serve as presidents under a terribly hostile political climate and facing the stress of ongoing lawsuits and Epstein files. It is not difficult to conjecture that Trump’s medical problems will soon lead to the end of his presidency and life.

The release of Epstein files may also be somewhat linked to Trump’s biological decline. Those files should have been released long ago, but a younger, more intellectually able Trump was able to prevent their release. As Trump loses faculties, he lets things go. He let the Epstein files go. He gave a bad talk at Davos (he still dared to speak freely, without any obvious script. That’s a nice touch of honesty, that Trump has often been guilty of. )

The Epstein Emails are now available with the full google search interface and lots of picture. Yet, there is nothing is the press about them. It also means more unexpected political events like random shootings and more wars are more likely to happen in the near future — i.e. between now and the end of the Trump presidency.

Some thoughts on Greenland

Greenland has a very small population and vast resources. It is owned by Denmark but it is not part of the EU or Schengen. Thus, the European Union does not own it.

Despite its potentially vast resources, Greenland remains terribly undeveloped and keeping it costs the Danish Crown half a billion dollars a year. That’a about $100 for every citizen of Denmark and $10 000 for every citizen of Greenland. The money is used to maintain the state of the art social services, health care and other government spending.

The US maintains the only significant military presence on the island. It was established in the Second World War, in order to prevent Greenland falling into the hands of Nazi Germany.

In order for Trump to take Greenland for the US, and take our eyes off the Epstein files, he should somehow fulfill the will of the people of Greenland to join the United States. At the moment, they are very much opposed.

Trump could act as follows:

1) set up a website, where every citizen of Greenland can opt to join the United States by signing something like a Quit Claim Deed, in exchange for money paid in cryptocurrency immediately.

As Congress would be too slow to fund such things, Trump could call upon friends like Elon Musk or even use his own money. Later, they could resell their stake in Greenland to the United States, at considerable profit. Or keep it for retirement.

If all the people of Greenland were to sign for, say, $10 0000 each, this would cost about half a billion dollars, or the amount every Greenlander receives every year from the Danish government as subsidy. But, Trump only needs half.

In recent history, we have several precedents where the will of the people was preyed upon to justify changing national borders. These are

— Brexit. The EU can be seen as a country, and, perhaps, to some extent, colonial master of Britain. Much less than the British population and just over half of the people who decided to vote have chosen Brexit, and Brexit we have.

— Scotland had a referendum about splitting from Britain. It failed, as no majority was achieved.

— Catalonia wanted to split from Spain, based on a referendum, but the Spanish government did not allow it. The organizers were judged for treason.

— Crimea split away from Ukraine and joined Mother Russia based on a referendum organized in similar fashion to other referendums in the region. When the KGB counts, the results are usually right.

In order to make people in Greenland sign up, the price may be adjusted randomly, publicized in the media through promotions and special reductions or increases.

Trump would not be breaking any laws in acting in this manner. He is not subject to the laws of Greenland, and he, alongside his descendants, have already been banned from the territory for 100 generations. I can only not see the foolishness of the Greenlandic government, as they’ve just banned their own people from their country in the distant future.

If we assume the population stays constant and no inbreeding, Donald should have 2 kids (he’s got more) and each of those kids should have 2 and so on… Thus, after 100 generations, Donald should have 2^100 descendants. That is, about 10^30 people banned. The world today has under 10 billion people (10^10). It is thus nearly certain that, in 100 generations, nearly all Greenlanders will be descendants of Donald Trump and therefore banned from Greenland. This is also true for all tourists. The 100 generation ban therefore destinies Greenland to be empty long before the 100 generations (about 3000 years) pass.

This is the perfect time for such a move, as the Epstein files are about to be released. In the absence of war, Trump can be terribly vulnerable. In order to stay in power, he needs extraordinary scandals, and extraordinary scandals we have.

Trump invaded Venezuela in order to uphold the will of the Venezuelan people, based on a referendum he did not agree with (Maduro counted, Maduro won). Why not do the same with Greenland, but with a better legal basis, like the written consent of the people, given individually, in electronic form and sealed with a crypto bank transfer.

In the end, sure, some people in Greenland will not take the money. Trump can then proceed to divide the island. He can be generous, and take only the percentage he bought, despite, pretenders like Crimea and Brexit where the whole country went. Denmark can keep the people and the duty to continue to subsidize them.

In doing so, Trump will only acquire the uninhabited part of Greenland, with Denmark left with the entire population, the cities, and a bit of coast. Trump will get his place on the map, the territorial sea, the ice cap and future oil, minerals and whatever.

Later, either Trump or China can do something similar with Siberia as well as the South China Sea.

This approach would be difficult in more populated places like Taiwan, as more people would have to be bought. But, it might even work in Australia.

The government of Greenland could punish the people who sign up to Trump’s offer. That would create local unrest and put distance between the government and the people, which will benefit Trump.

Broader historical considerations:

The security of Greenland is guaranteed through NATO. NATO however does not prohibit a peaceful transfer of ownership.

The US established a military presence in Greenland during World War II, in order to prevent it from getting into German hands. The US finished the Second World War as the absolute winner. It first let the European powers destroy each other during WWII, and then let Russsia continue the destruction and stopping growth through opression of what was left after the war. This left the US as the colonial master of the whole world. It thus no longer mattered who formally owned what, as the US was essentially free to do as it wanted, and it did so from Panama to Japan. It also punished those who opposed, like Vietnam, Iraq, Venezuela…

Denmark later joined the European Union, and essentially gave Greenland to Germany. This isn’t formally true (Greenland isn’t in the EU), but it can very easily go that way. This is exactly what the US was trying to prevent in the Second World War, and what it’s trying to prevent today.

The same can be said about Russia. As Ukraine was trying to align itself with the West, where, at least locally, Germany dominates, Russia decided to intervene with a special military operation and a denazification campaign. While the world did condemn it, they have not done enough to make Russia lose. In fact, Putin’s grip in Russia is stronger than without the war.

As the world accepts Russian aggression, first in Crimea and now all of Ukraine, this gives Trump and the US the signal that now is the right moment to take Greenland alongside Venezuela and Iran.

Furthermore, as NATO breaks down and the US loses its position as Colonial Master of the World, it is sensible to use its present position to take what it can, while it can. That is, Greenland, and, why, not, Antarctica and a big chunk if the Ocean (Joe Biden did quietly expand the territorial waters 2 years ago, adding about one million square miles of ocean, mostly in the Arctic and more than 200 miles from the shore)

Economic development: While Denmark owns Greenland, it failed to make it profitable and the economic development was minimal.

We can draw a parallel between American owned Alaska and the East of Siberia. If one takes the easternmost part of Russia, about the size of Alaska, they’re going to find maybe 5 people and a bunch of polar bears in the whole territory. Alaska would have been the same, if it had stayed in Russian hands. Luckily, the US bought it, and now it is, at least, economically, far above territories on the other side of the Bering Strait.

In the long term, there’s a good chance that Greenland will be more economically developed in American hands.

The Danish government did correctly state that, under its friendship with the US, Denmark does not intend to prevent American military and economic activity in Greenland. It is however true that, whatever economic development happens, it will be plagued by Denmark’s famously high taxes and not the most flexible bureaucracy. American ownership would mean more bureaucratic flexibility and tax revenue going to Washington.

And, it bloody looks good on the map!

Denmark never really took advantage of that. One never thinks of Denmark being mostly Greenland when one looks at the map. The US is in the right place in history to call itself great by stretching itself from Greenland to The Gulf of America.

And Trump won’t forget to make some funny faces, say some outrageous things, so people don’t look at those damned Epstein files!

Also, have his agents shoot some more innocent people to give the press something to do. The more outrageous the crime, the more innocent the people, the more the press will talk about it. And, why, not, when things get too outragous become the hero again and conclude the ICE circus with an amnesty for all immigrants currently in the US? Promise to make them citizens, so they vote in the midterms. And, for the future, since Trump calls himself the Tariff King, why not allow anyone to come to the US and work while taxing fresh immigrants considerably more. Say, if an American pays 25% tax, let the immigrants pay 50% or even 75%. Would sure make America great again! Some of the best years of my life were spent in America. I would love to see it going in a direction of growth again, but for now that is wishful thinking.

The debate started by the shooting of Renee Good

Renee Good was shot by an ICE agent. The woman, a married mother of three including a 6 year old child, was clearly not posing any physical danger to the agents, but she was also doing her best to hinder and annoy them as best as she could. Crucially, she refused to stop her car when asked to do so. She also refused to allow the agents to board the vehicle. She was doing her best to protest and not to obey. At first she refused to leave when the officers told her to do so, but then drove away when they became aggresive. The orders appeared contradictory. One of the officers told her to stay and one to remain, while they forced her window open and were trying to board her car.

So what is the law? Does a private citizen have the obligation to obey orders coming from armed ICE agents? Do members of the general public have a sufficient understanding of ICE to be aware that they must obey orders? Or, are they free to act as they wish?

If, indeed, Renee Good broke the law by protesting and interfering with the work of the ICE agents, why is the US not taking any legal action against against the millions of people who, in response to Renee Good’s shooting are doing the same now? Why does the government not dare issue fines or whatever penalty they deem reasonable to these millions of people? Such penalties are vastly less than the death penalty delivered to Renee Good, and that is not justice.

Google’s AI, now the standard source of information, considered above the intellectual capacity of most people, says the following:

“U.S. citizens are generally not obliged to obey ICE orders because ICE's primary authority is over non-citizens, and citizens have full constitutional rights. “

Thus, as a American citizen, Renee Good did not break any law when she disobeyed the oder of the ICE officers and instead told him to take a walk. That officer had no authority over US citizens. He may take pictures, bring the matter to court, and the judge will probably not issue a fine or prison time for the actions of Mrs Good.

Knowing this, and, perhaps frustrated by his lack of power, the officer did what many frustrated med do — violence. To my mind, his actions are running on the same mind algorithms as a parent slapping an annoying child, or a man punching an annoying woman who taunts him the whole day about her rights and his inability to hit her. Of course, since most people who do this are not armed, most such events do not result permanent in harm. Some do, and, in those cases, the men are often prosecuted.

Women do this too, but, less often and due to their biology, women hitting men end up in court less frequently. Now, an agent or policeman is not allowed to act on feelings or personal impulses. Furthermore, an ICE agent, with no authority over US citizens cannot ask a citizen to do what he wants. He may summon the local police, who have such powers, but must not act violently and take matters in his own hands, with a gun.

Make no mistake. Renee Good was there to protest and hinder. She as doing her very best to prevent the ICE agents from doing their jobs. She used whistles to warn potential targets that the officers were trying to arrest with valid powers since they could arrest immigrants. But, when in the police, you can’t just shoot annoying people.

An argument was made that the officer’s past trauma from a different interaction with another person led him to fire his gun. An officer, however, should not fire his gun in a way that is influenced by his feelings, personal situations or past trauma.

The Trump administration took an unusual stance to protect their ICE agent. This, I don’t understand. Normally, the president should have used his right to stay silent on such matters, before an investigation is completed. Maybe state that the officer is innocent until proven guilty or something neutral and non-inflammatory. These are politically correct lies, which are widely used. Trump however, chose to tell the truth. That is, tell us what he believes. Or what he wants the investigation to conclude. That a woman who does not obey the orders of agents who may not be authorized to give such orders deserves to be shot dead on an American street.

In the same way a dictator who runs an oil rich country deserves to be taken from his bed and dragged in front of an American judge, so that the US can run his country and take back the American Oil that Venezuela appears to have stolen. Most notably, similar dictators, not plagued by oil wealth, are not affected. Because American interests come first. Justice is only served when it benefits the right kind of people, the system that supports them or something dark and fuzzy we do not understand.

So many things are happening, that no one thinks of Epstein anymore. The war in Ukraine also risks getting forgotten… Gaza has also not been mentioned for some time.

Two Gods ascend to heaven

Once upon a time, I received my diploma from the hands of the Gods. That particular God, David Baltimore just joined the others in the Heavens on Sept 6. He was the president of Caltech at the time of my graduation. The picture shows him handing my diploma.

Baltimore’s 1975 Nobel was for his research on the viral nature of cancer. He was only 37 when he received the award. The PAP-smears almost every woman has in the Western World are a consequence of his research as well as of earlier work of the Romanian Aurel Babeş and Greek-born American Georgios Papanikolaou.

David Baltimore was the only Nobel Prize winner I worked for who had already received the award before I met him. Of the 5 Nobel Prize winners I worked with two lost their lives in the past few weeks. The other was Rai Weiss. He died on August 25 this year. Rai was 92. He had shared the 2018 Nobel Prize for LIGO with two of my PhD advisors: Kip S. Thorne and Barry Barish. Rai was born in Berlin and moved to America to escape the Nazis. I also started Physics in Berlin and was emboldened to move to America by the German government giving me a deportation order due to visa issues. Sure, it was far less threatening than Rai’s. He almost made it to the 10 year anniversary of gravitational wave detection.

My two PhD advisors are still fighting for gravitational wave astronomy today, each in their own way. They both give seminars and rally the press to get the momentum to allow current gravitational wave detectors to continue and be upgraded. Barry C. Barish was my formal PhD advisor. If I count my thesis as a joint publication, I was one of his very, very few students.

Kip was my God as a child, and among us, PhD students at Caltech, at times, we used to call him God. A dozen or so years later, the Nobel Committed agreed. Kip was my main reason for going to Caltech. A meeting with Kip at a LISA meeting at AEI, where I was a German diploma student was the decisive factor in my admission to Caltech. He took the time to speak for hours to a student who had read his books and was brave enough to suggest corrections, and even discuss some of his own theories. Today my paper with Kip (and only me and Kip!) is part of my contribution to gravitational waves astronomy.

Later, I wrote a second paper on the mirrors aiming LIGO's main laser, which was the first cornerstone in Andrew Lundgren’s career in gravitational waves — his first LIGO paper. I was finishing graduate school at the time, and the paper was under my supervision. It built on the mirror research I had done earlier with Kip. Andy went on to be the first senior scientist to see the first event with LIGO, which is the most important in the history of the machine and which was honored with the 2018 Nobel.

Another contribution is a set of gravitational waves lectures. They are still the World’s most famous course on gravitational waves online (https://astro-gr.org/online-course-gravitational-waves/). This set of movies I initiated, and built together with Kip and Yanbei Chen was a turning point in Kip’s career. We used to talk about what he would do in his old age when his mind will no longer be so sharp. After these movies, he decided against waiting, and moved to work at Holywood. With me and with his many other students, he did reality. We played with black holes, gravitational wave detectors — the exciting bits of the reality that bend space and slow down time, in their full mathematical beauty.

After me, came Chris Nolan who did fiction in Interstellar and history in Oppenheimer. Kip served as executive producer for Interstellar and advisor on Oppenheimer, both heavy Hollywood hits to the tune of half a billion each. Oppenheimer was Nolan’s most nominated film, with 7 Oscars won. Interstellar didn’t do bad either.

The time I did the movies with Kip was my only break in my employment with David Politzer, another nobel prize winner. I quit working for a Nobel Prize winner only to take a job with another, where I could make an original contribution to the work underlying the prize. H. David Politzer shared the 2004 Nobel Prize with David Gross and Frank Wilczek for their discovery of asymptotic freedom in quantum chromodynamics.

Of all my employers, he has the longest tenure. I was his assistant (TA) for Physis 1 for half a decade. In my whole life, I never worked for anyone else for a longer time. The work that led to his Nobel Prize was completed before my birth. I will never forget the countless office hours we spent together, often just me and David, as the students had better things to do, and perhaps more important people to learn from.

Everything dope, including the pope

On the second of May, Donald Trump posted a picture of himself as pope (AI generated, of course). At the time, I brushed it aside as a bad joke.

Pope Francis received J D Vance the day before he died. This is one of the last pictures we have of Francis alive.

Today, May 8, the world learned of Robert Francis following pope Francis as Pope Leo XIV. He was greeted by major news outlets including the guardian, CBS news and some others, and with the catch phrase in my title.

Did Trump know something? This is the first American Citizen pope. Second American pope, if we count Pope Francis’ South American origin. Is an American pope a good thing for Trump? A victory of sorts? Sure, no one would ever think that Trump would reinvent himself as committed to lifelong celibacy and accede to the throne in Vatican. Was the picture an allusion to the American pope to come? Did Trump know? Or, did he guess? A good educated guess? Is he the fool who spoke the truth with this picture?

The choice of name is also surprizing: the new pope will be known as Leo XIV. The first thing that comes to mind is what the previous Pope Leo did. Leo XIII is famous for advertising cocaine, at the time known as a Vin Mariani, and sold by reputable chemists. Sure, Cocaine was a revolutionary drug, and not necessarily always a bad thing. It is the precursor or painkillers we use today usually called xxxx-ine (novocaine, lidocaine, etc).

Later, it was Coca Cola that put cocaine on every sucker’s table, after the US prohibition on alcohol forced the soft drink company to eliminate red wine from the original recipe. People were addicted to alcohol and exposed to Coca-Cola’s revolutionarily refreshing mix of red wine, cocaine and caffeine (from the kola nut). When American Prohibition banned alcohol, CocaCola provided a way for alcohol addicts to satisfy some of their cravings and bridge onto a new, legal addictive substance.

And yet, it is likely Coca Cola in its modern version with only caffeine and sugar is responsible for more loss of life than the old cocaine powered drink. Today’s Coca Cola promotes obesity through its weakly addictive sugar, and may cause more loss of life than its earlier versions as its mild effect is felt by vastly more people.

Last, but not least, I want to remind our readers that pope Leo the XIII was known for his support of education, science and astronomy, and in particular for re-estabilishing the Vatican Observatory in its modern form. He also fought for the right of workers, and for fair and safe working conditions.

Pope Leo XIV, welcome! I hope you will make the world a better place!

I shall raise a glass of whatever drink you come up with!

As for me, I shall continue serving the Church of Galileo Galilei, Giordano Bruno, Isaac Newton, Blaise Pascal, Charles Darwin and others. I wonder how mighty the Catholic Church might have been if it had recognized them as saints instead of bestowing the honor only on others.

Interpreting the oval office scene

The world has recently witnessed remarkable scenes in the Oval Office. Donald Trump did a spectacular U-turn in American policy, apparently turning away from Europe and against Ukraine and promoting lines that appear to come straight from Putin’s propaganda. He may be a comical character despised by many, but his administration is not made of stupid people. We should not forget that in all Trump’s elections he got vastly more votes for the dollar than the competition. Trump also had the intellectual upper ground in the Corona situation (ignore the virus, and minimize economic impact). In light of this, I tried hard to find a logical justification for the perplexing scenes we have seen in the Oval Office, and here’s the best I can come with.

War with China?

China’s economy is the same size as the US. China is currently the only competitor to the US in the space of Artificial Intelligence. DeepSeek can rival with Open AI or any other American outfit. An alliance between Russian and China, the core nations of BRICS, would be very dangerous to the US. Together, Russia and China would have the largest land area, the largest economy, largest population, largest army and, arguably, largest nuclear arsenal of any nation or alliance in the world. Also, both Russian and China are dictatorships, and, therefore, more fit for war than democracies. Both place little value on human life, enabling them to lose a large number of soldiers without problems for the regime.

The war in Ukraine has, so far, brought Russia and China closer. This is very dangerous for the US and current world order. The Chinese cities, population as well as economic and military targets are relatively undefended and vulnerable to both Russian and American attacks. Russia is however able to hit China with nuclear weapons easier than the US. Thus, having Putin on his side can be seen as important for Trump, and not without reason. In exchange for support against China, Trump could give Putin not only Ukraine, but also the rest of Europe. The Trump administration finds it easiest to give away what's not theirs to give.

Consequences for Ukraine and for Russia.

In the current war, Ukraine has relied heavily on US support. Following the Oval Office argument, that support has stopped. It might have stopped anyway, as Trump is averse to spurning money on the matter and friendly towards Putin. There are however a lot of American weapons system in Ukraine. These systems are governed by agreements that protect Russia. Since the beginning of the war, Ukraine was not allowed to to strike deep inside Russia, and was heavily limited in its choice of targets. With American relations broken and American support gone, Ukraine may now be free to strike anything in Russia with the remaining US weapons. This could open to possibility of powerful bombs landing in large cities, with serious loss of Russian life. Economic, military and nuclear sites can also be hit. Symbolic places like the Red Square or Putin’s Palace on the Black Sea made famous by Alexey Navalny can also be targeted.

Sure, Russia would respond, perhaps starting a deadlier phase of World War III. Unfortunately, it does not seem like war is coming to an end. It should given the climate problems it causes, but the leaders of the world seem less reasonable than ever before. WWIII is what Trump warned us about, and, indeed, it is my opinion that World War III is ongoing and won’t stop anytime soon.

Looking towards China for freedom? DeepSeek vs ChatGPT/SearchGPT/ScholarGPT

A few years ago, I caught a rare moment when western governments were hallucinating badly and among world leaders, Alexander Lukashenko, the dictatorial president of Belarus was closest to the truth. I called that post "Truth from Belarus". Today, we have freedom of speech from China in the form of DeepSeek. China has long been known to censor people, but, at least in some areas, it seems to let its robots be free.

The robot in question is DeepSeek. It is a fantastic competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini and Elon’s Grok. It came to the scene fast and furious, on a tiny budget, compared to its American competitors, running good code on second grade computer chips. As Sam Altman put it, it is (relatively) easy to copy something that you know works.

Yet, DeepSeek is not a copy. It is a vast improvement, as it delivers fairly comparable results, with vastly less computational power. Thus, it can run on few, cheap processors. The American way to grow Artificial Intelligence is to throw untold teraflops of computer power at the problem. They plan to build server farms that need more electricity than some countries, warm the local climate by cooling their computers and boost global carbon emissions to generate the power by burning everything they can including "good, clean coal" as per president Trump's speach. Companies like NVIDIA are supposed to build those chips, and so their stock just skyrocketed.

DeepSeek proved that unnecessary. DeepSeek can run on low grade chips and delivers amazing results. US restricted the availability of high end chips and technology to China. But is not the quality of the results that I'd like to talk about here. It is the censorship. In some areas, not few or far-between, the US censors its AI robots in much heavier ways than China. This is surprising, as we think of America as the country of freedom. The censorship often makes the results useless at best and misleading at worst. The US models are gagged and castrated. They show proof of principle, at a huge computational cost, but fail to address many sensitive topics, including getting details right on fairly well known people, published research, publicly available materials, etc.

DeepSeek comes with amazing clarity of thought and, in my (limited) experience, vastly less censorship. Like the self-centered physicst I am, I tested it on the person I know best, myself. I asked the 3 models from OpenAI to summarize my research — all my scientific work is easily available on google, it's public, it's published, it's not controversial and definitely not a secret to anyone. So, there is no need for censorship, right?

DeepSeek gives clear, crisp answers. All true, to the point, with relevant links. The jewel on the crown of DeepSeek’s answer about my filmography was to say that, when working with Kip Thorne, I did reality (in creating the first web course on gravitational waves, Ph237), and then came Chris Nolan to do fiction in Interstellar (2014) and history in Oppenheimer (2023). The Chinese server got confused, busy and crashed when I asked about work by my children. I guess that goes beyond most AI’s wildest imagination.

ChatGPT’s O1 censors the question about who I am. Gives an evasive answer. It then attributes my research on LIGO to a Mihai G. Bondarescu (I have no middle name. My father refused to give me one. He thought the postman would be confused if I had more than one first name. So this person, Mihai G. Bondarescu, does not exist). It then mixes up my research with my sister’s research and quotes her faculty advisors from Cornell as my collaborators. This is plain stupidity. It then concludes the answer referring to me and my work by my correct name. It fails to find anything for my filmography, when my movies are very well known — we’ve always been #1 in the world among online courses on gravitational waves. I have two Nobel prizes among lecturers and the cast includes known Hollywood names like Kip Thorne. ChatGPT fails to find any of the many books written by my children.

SearchGPT does vastly better. It includes my picture in its reply, which is a nice touch. It does, however, mix up Dr Mihai Bondarescu with Dr Ruxandra Bondarescu and says that I was affiliated with UIUC where my sister was once a student. SearchGPT summarizes my LIGO research reasonably well. Its answer for my filmography includes a link to one of the lectures in the Ph237 series. It thus can find movies I authored. It quotes correctly “Dr. Bondarescu was instrumental in initiating and coordinating the publication of these video recordings and related materials, making them accessible to a global audience”. When asked about my children, it finds two of the many books my children have written, but makes Dr Ruxandra Bondarescu my child instead of my sister, which is ridiculous since she is only three years younger than me. Conclusion: Confused on purpose? Or starved of teraflops?

ScholarGPT gives a short and reasonable summary of my work — too short and missing important things, I would say. Maybe, it’s the heavy hand of censorship again? ScholarGPT then employs a friend — Sider.ai to help it summarize my work in LIGO, and does a reasonably good job, although not as crisp and to the point as DeepSeek. Like ChatGPT, ScholarGPT denies the existence of my filmography. This can easily cost me a job if I rightfully brag about my work that I did and the interviewer, unfamiliar with the field, believes the GPT that looks professional and I look like an impostor, claiming to have done work I have done. ScholarGPT fails to find any of the books, movies, talks, blogs and other materials that my children have published and wrongly claims that they have no notable contribution to humanity. As David is now applying for University, and ScholarGPT is often used by admission committees to factcheck prospective student applications, this can easily cost him his scholarship, university admission, career and, ultimately, negatively impact his life and his ability to impact others.

Why censor, America?
Perhaps, the one trillion dollar loss in market value of AI - related stocks (NVIDIA included) is very well deserved and only the beginning. The One State Solution

The one state solution.
No village, no Mafia, no church, no family.

In general, in any human society, every individual relates to
— a family
— a village/community/mafia
— a church
— a state

These structures offer the individual the following services
— social security
— basic services like roads, trains, hospitals
— law enforcement
— spiritual guidance
And compete with each other for taxing the individual.

Here are a few examples of how things work:

The Family. It is the oldest form of human organization. Each family has some traditions. This culture is what makes each family a little different and what families use to compete with each other. When people are poor or weak, they often find release at home, in the family. Or, at least, used to. The same for when they are young or old. When people do bad things — drugs, sleeping around, etc — the family is often able to address the matter in a more effective way than any other agency. Furthermore, whoever earns money in a family, is supposed to bring a large fraction of that money home to be used in ways that benefit the whole family, not just the individual. In exchange the individual gets a home, which is much cheaper and nicer than a hotel, home cooked food that’s cheaper and nicer than a restaurant and, maybe, love that comes to life in happy children to take the values and spirit of the family into the future.

The Mafia and the village. The village is composed of people living nearby (often including extended family members like cousins, uncles, aunts, etc), which are expected to help, and of officials: the priest/rabin, the doctor, the school teacher, who provide advice. Mafias, on the other hand, are considered shady, and not official. They are networks of powerful individuals. In small cities, the mafia mostly merges with "the village" or community.

Imagine you are in a hospital and a doctor makes a mistake. Who will fellow doctors be loyal to? Their colleague, the hospital, the patient or the truth? Or, what happens when a policeman makes an error? Maybe he loses his cool and hits or shoots a presumed criminal without a good reason. This is a crime. Who will fellow policemen be loyal to? The victim, the law and the truth or their fellow policeman. The same example can be give for army personnel or for religious leaders. Imagine a priest makes a mistake. Who will the other priests be loyal to? God, the victim and the truth? Or their church, and the friend/colleague? Imagine a jail in any country. When a guard acts illegally against a prisoner, which side will the other guards take? The victim and the truth or their friend and colleague? Of course, we may dream on, but it’s rarely the truth.

Often when the truth is exposed, the perpetrators can have a lot of trouble, even when acting legally. These are all examples of mafia law ruling supreme over individuals and over the state law. These are mafias that operate currently in our society, well outside the standard domains of mafias, like sex and drugs. When a member has trouble, his colleague will offer protection. This may be in the form of colleagues taking over extra unpaid work or overlooking mistakes or even defending criminal wrongdoing in front of a court of law.

I’d venture to say that every company has a culture and "a mafia"/community that works to some degree. These mafias are essential for the functioning of companies. A company that is loyal to the truth above all else may end up making little profit. Tax paying mafia members will have an easier life and achieve more with less effort. It pays to be in.

The Church. The Church pretends to be heavy on the spiritual side. Yet, its tax collection abilities have been quite good and as old as the Church itself. After all, big churches need lots of money to run and to be build, etc. The Catholic Church has also funded most of science until recently. Without the Catholic Church, we would not have Galileo Galilei or Charles Darwin, Pascal, Newton and many others. We would not have astronomy and evolution. Despite the inner conflicts, these are some of the best things the Church produced. While we remember the Church for jailing Galileo (for a rather short and not very deadly time) or for discrediting evolution or for burning alive less fortunate scientists, we must not forget that it is the Church who paid for all the research. The Church was the main science funding organization, and it gave us astronomy, evolution and much more.

While, in modern times, the law enforcement has become less brutal in the church, it is still rather effective. People who attend church are quite unlikely to be involved in the sort of crime that the church does not like. The church has covered abuses by priests to maintain its power in the same way the army covers abuse.

The State. In recent years, the state has become very powerful. Different states have also joined forces in a common Western culture that has the same values almost worldwide. The US sits atop of this virtual edifice, and other countries follow. For example, the US was the first country to have a president. Now, most countries do. It is also an union of states that others like the EU try to copy. This very powerful global state has taken over most things that the church, mafia and family used to do in the past. Thus, most individuals pay a larger fraction of their income to the state than to the family, the mafia or the church. This makes the state ever more present and powerful.

This power is seen in good ways — social protection is now more likely to be offered by the state, weakening connections within churches, mafias and families. Law enforcement is also very much in the hands of the state, with mafias, families and churches playing an ever smaller role. The state often gives a better return on investment for the individual’s taxes. It operates at larger scales and has lower margins than families, churches and mafias. It’s also said to be more honest, less subjective and makes fewer mistakes. It is more permissive. Many things are supposed to be better.

But is it always better? All intelligent systems can hallucinate. We see it quite clearly in ChatGPT, but happens to human powered organizations too. An ever bigger state will mean ever bigger consequences of these hallucinations. The Corona phenomenon is a clear example. Based on a government hallucination, most countries decided to pass extraordinary laws that restricted individual freedom in ways unprecedented. Different states, that bear different names reached the same ideas and conclusions at the same time, all hallucinating in the same way.

This invites the question: How different are they, i.e, the different states? The consequence of hallucinatory behavior is loss of territory, population, income, etc. Mad men can’t be the head of household. And, when they are, the family often fails to compete with others. Same with companies and, I dare say, churches. Madness leads to death, loss, failure. When humanity is split in different separate groups, the same hallucination will not occur at the same time everywhere. Thus, while some may die, there will always be some that survive in a competing system of rules and laws. Those will then take over the territory, resources and, maybe, surviving members of the hallucinating group.

The situation becomes scary when there is only one entity that has power. Then there is no other way. Then no one does things differently. Even if the frequency and intensity of hallucinations is low, having a unique system is terribly dangerous and brings us closer to extinction. It's like having one kind of chicken, and one kind of apples. They are all vulnerable in the same way. We argue the state does not discrimiate, but one cannot reach this level of power without discrimination.

Discrimination. Each system will favor some group of people over others. Societies, churches and legal systems often do not agree. There was a time when we had slaves. They were an abused underclass. Today we often treat animals wrong. And women. And black people. And people of a different religion like the jews or the muslims. And immigrants. And children. And homosexuals couples. And the list is not complete.

Often the underclass is not visible from inside the system. Powerful systems can cause more harm to the group they target. And, the modern state is very powerful. OK, but we have laws and rules and an effective religion against discrimination. We are not allowed to discriminate against most of the above groups. Our global state is, perhaps, the least discriminatory in history. Sure, nothing is perfect. Immigrants and children can’t vote. Immigrants can’t access wellfare or work in the same way as natives/locals. Children can’t attend university, often even when intellectually able to. They also don’t go to jail when they do bad things. Women in Belarus can’t get the capital punishment, as men do. But should they? Should there be no discrimination?

Is there a group of people that the current global state abuses in ways future historians will find akin to the Holocaust or Stalin’s Russia or worse? Is there a situation or quality a group of people can have to be mercilessly discriminated against by our progressive society? I will now put forward a daring hypothesis.

Unconcieved Children. Across all animal species where sexual reproduction takes place, evolution has taken great care to give unconcieved babies a very strong bundle of rights. Males fight, often to death, for mating a female. They then put the lives of their unconceived babies above their own. They risk life in order to create new life. Situations where existing adults allow an unconceived animal to forego a chance to be conceived are very rare in nature. I can’t think of any. Whenever conception is possible, conception often takes place. This ensures the existing generation gives birth to the next generation. So life continues. If there ever was a form of life that didn’t do this, it no longer exists. For the first time in the history of life as we know it, our human society has decided to go against all of nature and exterminate unnconceived children. For the first time, since the dawn of time, men pass by women and allow eggs to go unfertilized year after year to serve the state by paying taxes and to serve their own adictions which are so strong they take precendence over all else including reproduction. By addictions I mean those that allowed and often encouraged by the state and its sponsored institutions like internet, videogame, social media, medications, porn, and food addiction, which in turn enable the state to control the population. They thus allow unconceived life to never see the light of day taking away not only most of the present, but also our future. A few brave but deperate women choose to parent alone when their biological clock is almost done ticking. Some have children with donors chosen by state sponsored companies based on facial matching and other such techniques, whom the child may meet or not depending on the laws of the state by the age of 18. Of course, because it's the last train, only a fraction of those who try to catch it succeed.

While we are so great at not discriminating against anyone, are we right to deny life to a group of people just like us, just because they haven’t been conceived yet? Just because they have no DNA and no feelings, does it give us the right to prevent them from having these in the future? And, by not letting them live, are we not killing our selves? Our future selves? Ourselves, as a culture, species, mankind? Ourselves in one word?

Will AI bring the end of civilization?

Recently, Geoffrey Hinton made headlines with his claim that AI is rather likely (10 - 20% chance) to end civilization in the next 30 years. No, it would not be the end of the world, just the end of the world as we know it. Given that the year is ending today, I thought it was an apropriate discussion.

Who is Geoffrey Hinton? Is he qualified to make such claims?
Yes, he is very qualified. Hinton used to work at Google, developing AI. His work earned him the Touring prize in 2018. That’s the closest equivalent to the Nobel prize in Computer Science. He then quit working at Google to gain more freedom of speech and won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2024 for his work in computer science.

The multidimensional minimization algorithm
Hinton and I have something in common. The core of my very first paper with Ed Seidel and Miguel Alcubierre was a multidimensional minimization algorithm. With this paper, I got the first flight of my life to South Africa, where I got the prize for the best student talk at GR 16, the largest conference in General Relativity in the world. I was an undergrad, and all other students were PhD students. My PhD at Caltech was due to start that fall. Ed went on to be the director of two NSF divisions and Miguel went back to Mexico to be the director of the Institute of Nuclear Science at UNAM.

The core of Hinton’s work that resulted in this year’s Nobel prize is also a multidimensional minimization algorithm, very similar to the problem I played with when I was taking my first steps in science.

So… will civilization end? Has it ended before?
The cues for the future often lie in the past. What qualifies as the end of a civilization? Each civilization comes with a set of rules, a culture and some criteria for natural selection. To end civilization, these things must change radically. Thus, the rules, culture and natural selection must not be the same as before.

To my mind, the following events qualify:
— discovery of fire split humanity in people with and people without fire. The people with fire had a phenomenal advantage. They had heat, shelter and safety, as well as the ability to cook previously hard to eat things. The culture and achievements of people who don’t use fire were thus lost. Fire became a central part of every day life and life became impossible without fire.
Contact with the Europeans for Americans (American Indians at the time) led to their disappearance. Most died not in direct combat, but of flu, smallpox and the common cold. They lost their traditions, languages, beliefs, culture and became slaves in their own land. Some mixed with the Europeans. It led to the creation of the greatest nation on Earth, although little of this nation’s culture resembles theirs. Their civilization ended.
— We can say the same about Australian Aboriginals. Not sure about Africans and the South Americans. They managed to survive at least in numbers. They did still adopt a lot of technology and beliefs and lost their own. Thus, their civilizations did end.
Electricity was very much like fire, but this time it was adopted much faster. It very quickly went from a scientific discovery to powering every aspect of life. I can thus argue it ended the world order before it, to give rise to a new world order, with new rules, new culture, etc. Those who rejected its use were the Amish. They are 300,000 and have managed to keep some of the culture before electricity alive.
Internal combustion engine . It ended the world of horses. Horses used to move most things that moved. They were a central part of human civilization. They are all gone, in just a few decades.
Computers went on to control every aspect of our lives. They became the interface between every man and the world. Today they control the interactions between every man and every other man, woman or child. They ended the world before them to start a new world order. The internet. Computers started talking. Again, a new world order. Very little of the culture before propagated after.
Mobile phones . The talking computers could be built to be small enough to fit in the palm of our hands. Thus they could be taken everywhere and can dominate all aspects of life. They went on to be the main way we interact with the world. Again, fundamental shift.
Medicine and birth control. Most countries are now below replacement and only few are above 3 children born per woman. This is the lowest integer number compatible with the existence of humanity. Furthermore, qualities like intelligence and health that were associated with reproductive success for millennia are no longer providing any advantage. Surprisingly, qualities that were previously associated with reproductive failure are now linked to reproductive success. Examples: poverty, drug use, lack of discipline to use a condom versus academic achievement, financial successes, discipline, etc.

So is Geoffrey H. right? Will AI bring a new world order and end civilization as we know it?
AI is our first contact with alien intelligence. It may be created on this planet, but it’s still intelligent and not too human. Will it do to us what the engines did to horses? Sure, engines have no feelings and they sure don’t hate horses. Yet, all horses are gone. Will AI do the same to us? It’s not unlikely. Like Geoffrey says, it is indeed very rare in nature that a less intelligent being controls a more intelligent one.

But we've created AI. Humans are its "mother", and we can unplug it any time we choose. Does it make us safe? In some species it happens that the mother is controlled by the offspring. I will provide the following examples:
— zombie fungus controlling ant behavior to climb on tall pieces of grass and die there, so the fungus can spread to the rest of the colony.
— Toxoplasma Gondi giving infected animals more courage. This controls the behavior of wild cats to get close to wolves, and of rats to get close to cats. It is instrumental in the reproduction of wolves in Yellowstone, where most of the pack leaders are infected. The pack leaders have the best breeding opportunities.
So, the offspring controlling its creator/host does happen, but not very often.

How likely are we to control the AI? We already have AI systems that control us. Who decides what results we get on Google? Who decides if we can get a loan, buy a house, a car or get a credit card? Who prices our insurance premiums for driving cars, health, etc? Who manages our stock portfolios? These are all decision taken by various incarnations of AI. As AI gets the ability to improve itself, the peace of progress can accelerate to infinity.

Already AI improves itself, with some human help. Think of a computer or phone. Can those components be made by humans? Understood by humans? Designed by humans? The answer to all these questions is NO. Thus, AI is already bulking itself up, with some guidance. The amount of guidance decreases, and may soon reach zero. At that point, AI starts developing and improving infinitely fast. That’s the famous singularity.

At that point, AI can bring about civilization ending events with a frequency that approaches infinity. It will not end civilization just once. It can do it many times in one year. The frequency of civilization ending events is already growing exponentially. This is the nature of our society. The AI has the ability to break with this exponential increase in frequency of civilization ending events and sent it to infinity much faster. Even the exponential is hard to survive. It is not clear we could.

OK, so, maybe AI is our only hope to avoid disappearing for other reasons. For example, today, most pople live in countries that are below replacement level. That is, women have under 2.1 children. India has recently joined this club. The collective West, Russian and China have long been in. Very few people live in countries with over 3 children born per woman. Such places were very rare 100 years ago. Now, it’s most of the world. We work, we spend our time creating virtual content, and forget about real life.

Of all technologies developed, AI was the fastest to reach a trillion dollars and has the fastest user base growth. This, in itself, is a civilization ending event, much like electricity, internet and the internal combustion engine were at their time. We survived those to some extent, although we are no longer a species with a long term future, as we have been for millions of years . Our numbers are now collapsing faster than during world wars or during the plague. Our genetic quality is also in free fall. All natural selection is off or reverted. And, now, a Nobel prize winer says that the lifetime of our species may be as short as one generation. Or even less.

The Corona phenomenon has proven to us that governments hallucinate, and that a new world order can be established quickly, without a reason, and perhaps irreversibly. Sure, this one was partially reversed, but, maybe, the next one won’t. Also viruses can be edited, produced and easily spread. Humanity can physically end with a virus that causes infertility. The “woke” mental virus appears do that, with no modern western country currently experiencing birth rates above replacement level. Russia, India and China, as well as most of South America and parts of Africa are also below replacement. So, maybe, we don’t even need a physical virus to die away.

Now, what can we do as individuals? Technology is a two edged sword. Would you tell a horse owner to not buy cars? Would such a strategy be successful for anyone? Horses included? Would you tell a 1980’s child to not use computers? To those in the 1990s to not use the interent? Would that bring professional or reproductive success? It surre did for the Amish, although it is a bitter pill to swallow. Can we stay away? Can the key to success be not embracing technology while competing against those who embrace it? Sure, digital dementia is now a widely accepted phenomenon. It's clear that brains of young people are rewring and that this rewiring is not beneficial. Addictive things are bad. TikTok thrives by fostering addiction. Facebook too. They are the cocaine of the modern times. ChatGPT/AI could grow to favor some form of addiction. After all it would be clearly favored by the market. Moderation is key, they say. But can one use cocaine in moderation? Will embracing technology help our children who are developing various forms of autism and ADHD and are swallowed by virutual reality so that they no longer get out of their room by the age of 12 be in a position to thrive in the world oder to come? is it better to teach them how to use AI or to teach them to stay sane and start over from the ashes of civilization? or even better can we do both without getting them addicted and sick? I wish I had more answers than questions.

I wrote a Christmas poem by standing on the shoulders of giants with verses inspired from Gamov and Jane Taylor. Now I shall endeavor to explain some of the physics behind the verses:

So what are quasars? Quasars are the brightest stars in the universe. One single quasar can produce as much light as a whole galaxy. They are powered by large black holes that dwell in the centers of galaxies. Their location allows these supermassive black holes to feast on stars and dust. They are very small for their mass. Matter finds it very hard to enter the black hole, which causes their accretion disks to get super heated and extremely luminous. Thus, the black hole radiates away a larger fraction of the mass of the accretion disk than a star would in its lifetime. In the accretion disk, everything burns. We are not limited to H, He or up to Fe as we are in stars. Here, the source of energy is gravitational potential energy, as matter descends down the gravitational potential well at the bottom of which the black hole dwells.

Quasar light is also strange. The spectral lines are broad and shifted from where they should be. That is because time near the black hole runs slower than further away. They are also broad as time runs at significantly different speeds throughout the accretion disk — faster further from the hole. In addition, we have a Doppler effect, as matter in the accretion disk moves at high speed (comparable to the speed of light!) and a significant fraction of that speed will be away from us or towards us. As such, the spectral lines of quasars will be both broad and shifted compared to a normal star.

Back to black holes... Black holes have a strange place in the cosmos. They are known for being both the darkest and brightest objects on the sky. They are dark because, once inside the black hole horizon, nothing, not even light can ever escape. Only Hawking radiation does, but this takes vastly more than the age of the universe. Yet, black holes are very tiny, and it’s very hard to get in one. Of all possible objects with a given mass, the black hole is the smallest and hardest to collide with and get inside.

So what if the Earth was a black hole? If the Earth was a black hole, it would be the size of a walnut. The Moon would be in the same place and feel the same, but meteorites would find it much harder to collide with the walnut-sized Earth mass black hole. Most of them would go on hyperbolic trajectories, and fly back in the skies. Some would get trapped as satellites, and stay in orbit for a very long time. They would gradually lose angular momentum, and go on ever lower orbits. They’d go below where the atmosphere burns them today. They’d go below where the oceans and the continents stand today. They’d then get close to the black hole going forever faster in ever smaller orbits. When their orbit reached a few centimeters across, their speed will become comparable with the speed of light, and yet the matter would not be inside the black hole. Larger meteorites (they could be as big as the moon, after all) would find it hard to fit in such a small space and become compressed. This extreme compression ignites nuclear reactions and sends light away. Such objects end up very bright.

Astrophysical black holes are stellar mass and larger than walnuts. They are typically some kilometers across. Supermassive black holes weigh a few millions to billions times the mass of the sun, and have diameters comparable to that of the sun.

I modified the astro version of twinkle, twinkle little star to turn it into a Merry Xmas version. Some rhymes are not original. I wrote it for my children and for my nephews. Merry Xmas to all and a happy new year.

Remember that screen-time produces measurable damages to grey matter and rewires the brain in ways we cannot entirely predict and we certainly cannot reverse. If you don't believe me, read Jonathan Haidt's book titled "The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness" . It has versions in most languages including German, Spanish, French, Romanian, etc, and it explains that leaving a child on the screen is as bad a sending them to Mars. His arguments are based on data. So, please, think twice if you have children who are very young before using a screen (phone, table, computer, TV) to keep them quiet or get them out of your way, and if your children are older, read this book with them and abstain together.

World War III -- four years later

On February 28, 2020, as the Corona Government Hallucination was unfolding, I argued it is the beginning of a world war. I talked about the world war a little later, on March 24. On March 15, 2020, I estimated the Covid-19 mortality rate at 0.2%, well below malaria and in the range of common illnesses like a slightly more severe flu. The regular flu kills three times less, but happens all the time.

On March 21, 2020, I argued Donald Trump’s strategy to be a bet against the hallucination. Thus, he negated the virus, and pushed the US on a trajectory that maximized infections and minimized lockdown damage, time and economic losses. At the time, I thought the goal of this strategy was to immediate reelection. He lost by a small margin. In an unprecedented move, Twitter acted against Trump to the point of removing him from the platform. Given the very small margin responsible for Trump’s loss, Twitter may well be responsible for it. A simple change in the algorithm that rank Trump’s tweets could easily achieve that.

I spoke against the Twitter decision at the time. I argued that everyone, including the president of the United States has the right to free speech. Twitter is an avenue to exercise this right. If a man is good enough to be the President of the United States and be in charge of the world’s largest army and nuclear arsenal, I believe he is also good enough to be afforded the freedom to speak on Twitter. Sure, he may be judged by what he says, and he may be impeached, etc. But these decisions are not for Twitter to make.

Now, whether we like it or not, Donald Trump was not only good enough to be president at the time, but also good enough to be president again. Twitter paid dearly. It is now in the hands of Elon Musk, the most capable man in the Trump administration. Most Twitter employees lost their jobs and Twitter’s stock market value plummeted. Should it rise again, it will be a very different animal, known as Elon’s X.

On March 27, 2020, I weighted carefully the loss of life through death against the loss of life through the measures. It was clear to me that the measures are wrong and Trump’s way was right. Trump may look like a mad man, but governments worldwide were hallucinating very badly.

Since then 4 years have passed. As I correctly argued on March 24, 2020, the Coronavirus and associated government hallucination have pushed the world from peace to war and supported dictators against democracy. Xi and Putin are still in power, and are now without doubt the strongest dictators since Mao and Stalin. Putin is now fighting the deadliest war in Europe since World War II. Arguably, about one million citizens of former USSR lost their lives fighting on Putin’s side in Russia or on the side of the West in Ukraine. Unlike the million people who lost their lives to the Coronavirus and were close to their time of natural death, the million killed by war are mostly young people, many of them almost children. The life loss is vastly greater than the toll of the pandemic. Of course, wars and injustice go beyond Ukraine. I look at Gaza, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria and Urkraine and at the various civil wars out there (and at Russia and Israel since there are plenty of parents who lost their children, too) and shake with sorrow for the many years in lives lost. I look at the mothers out there raising children. I see first hand how hard it is to have healthy children, then to go past the early years and keep them sane and healthy is even harder, and I am sadened by how easy it is to destroy all that work.

Trump is also back in the White House, with fresh dictatorial powers. Trump looks like a mad man, but he is not. Mad men don’t live so long. He also has a very capable Elon Musk by his side and a family that will sell anything (particularly things they do not own yet like the White House) to have power. Elon comes with Gork, a capable AI system that can compete with OpenAI’s Chat GPT and Google’s Gemini, and is perhaps more obssesed than Trump with taking over the world. Elon has a lot of experience running large enterprises efficiently. He started from little to become world’s richest man, with a fortune to the tune of half a trillion dollars. That’s over $50 for every citizen on the Planet or $1500 for every American. Musk’s personal fortune exceeds the annual GDP of 80% countries.Thus, Musk is a very capable dictator who rules over a country sized empire. In the case of Tesla, Musk owns 13% of the company, but has dictatorial powers. Same is true for Space X, Twitter and Neuralink. If given dictatorial powers, Musk is thus probably quite able to deliver what he has promised. That is, cut government spending and increase efficiency. Most government spending is wages, and many employees are useless. We’ve seen that with Twitter. Let that sink in. Like in Twitter, a lot of these employees can and will now be replaced by AI — intelligent machines that do people’s work better and cheaper.

The problem is not only the US, but the rest of the world. The world copies America. Remember George Washington? When he became the first president of the United States of America, he was also the first president of any nation in the world! Now most of the world has presidents. Thus people who look like Trump will be elected for high office worldwide. They are the aspiring dictators, the far left and the far right. These people will not be as tame as Donald Trump and won’t have advisors as capable as Elon Musk. They will also not be able to draw on the intellectual power of Tesla and Gork. They may even be banned from the most advanced versions of these systems, unlike Musk and his engineers. But they will win elections. They may be called the AFD in Germany, Nigel Farage in the UK or Calin Georgescu in Romania. All are problematic choices. The world copies America.

Now, the US may be the first country to outsource government work to artificial intelligence, but it will not be the last one to do so. Many will follow. The world will emerge very different from this just like it has after the last wars. Wars have always led to tremendous progress. We entered the First World War on horseback and got out of the second world war riding rockets to the Moon and into the Atomic age. Four years ago, we entered World War III because of a virus (be it genetically engineered or not — the tools are there and easy to use) and we will emerge some years from now with a new world order, where, perhaps, AI will be to humans what the internal combustion engine was to horses.

Musk also promises to deliver in making humanity a multi-planetary species. We have the technology to live on Mars. The Moon is also near. The Asteroid belt has many tiny rocks with little gravity that may prove interesting as hubs for transportation and have available heavy metals near the surface, due to their low gravity. But will we make it without destroying human life on Earth first? At the end 2024, just like four years ago, I pray for peace! After all, there is still plenty of room to go forward before going back to a stage where we are powered by manual labor, and our former deeds live in stories without the science background.
